I have a confession to make. I usually don’t read romance novels. However, my wife loves the books by Johnnie Alexander. Since I am working to improve my writing craft, I decided to try a new genre. So I picked up one of Johnnie’s latest books. The Cryptographer’s Dilemma was a pleasant surprise.
I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue of this story about Eloise Marshal and Phillip Clayton searching for a spy in the months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Eloise is the code-breaker. Phillip is the FBI agent. They travel across the country investigating letters about dolls that may contain intelligence reports. The characters are multi-dimensional and the plot holds a surprise or two. I recommend this book if you love historical romances. And if you don’t, you’ll still like this book.
